Cotswold country gardens at Barnsley House
Barnsley House’s garden inspires everything we do: from the freshly-picked ingredients on the menu at the Potager to the cut flowers dotted throughout the hotel, to the hand-tied bundles of lavender in the spa - the influence of Rosemary Verey’s garden prevails.
Take a wander through our enchanting gardens; from the romantic laburnum walk to the potager kitchen garden, follies and panoramic views of the rolling countryside just beyond our garden walls, there’s something to discover and inspire at every turn.
Once the home of renowned garden designer Rosemary Verey, the gardens of this luxury hotel remain a highlight. Produce picked by the chefs take pride of place in dishes such as tangy Barnsley House pickled beetroot, creamy goat’s cheese curd and candied hazelnuts.

A quintessential English country garden
Our garden history
Originally created by revered garden designer Rosemary Verey, the gardens at Barnsley House are a classic example of an English country garden that evolves with the seasons. With knot gardens, statues by Simon Verity and a working kitchen garden that supplies much of the produce found on the menus at The Potager and our village pub, The Boot, there are four acres of carefully tended grounds to amble through and discover.
Rosemary Verey designed famous gardens around the world - King Charles personally visited Barnsley House to take inspiration for the garden at Highgrove, of which a part is credited to Rosemary Verey. Sir Elton John and the New York Botanical Gardens also called on her talent. We're proud that our gardens at Barnsley were her first creation.
