This was Rosemary Vereys philosophy for her garden and an
essential part of what made Barnsley House the place it became.
Carved in stone above the garden door is the date 1697 with the
initials B.B.. This stands for Brereton Bouchier, squire
of Barnsley, who built the house of locally quarried Cotswold stone.
Symmetrical, simple yet beautiful, it faces south-east, so has the
the full benefit of the rising sun.
In the 1950s Rosemary Verey began re-designing the garden
and gradually transformed it into its present layout. The house
and grounds gained international acclaim as a place of remarkable
beauty, visited by garden lovers from around the world eager to
discover for themselves this perfect example of the English country
house and garden.
