Having been extremely well received by her Calcot Manor audience in June 2011 when she chatted about her recently-published “Millions Like Us: Women’s Lives in War and Peace 1939-1949”, Virginia Nicholson will now be heading to Barnsley House for an exploration of how women’s lives were then shaping up a decade plus later.

In ‘Perfect Wives in Ideal Homes’, Virginia Nicholson reconstructs the real 1950s through the eyes of the women who lived it. Step back in time to when our grandmothers scrubbed their doorsteps, cared for their families, lived, laughed, loved and struggled. This is their story.

The granddaughter of painter, Vanessa Bell, daughter of art historian and writer, Quentin Bell and great niece of Virginia Woolf, Virginia Nicholson studied at Cambridge University and lived abroad in France and Italy, then worked as a documentary researcher for BBC Television. Her other books include the acclaimed social histories, ‘Among the Bohemians: Experiments in Living 1900-1939’ and Singled Out: How Two Million Women Survived Without Men after the First World War’, all published by Penguin. She is married to writer, William Nicholson. The couple has three children and live in Sussex.

Tickets: £29.50 per head. Includes a two-course lunch and a glass of wine. Guests are invited to arrive from 12:00 noon with lunch served at 12:30pm.
